How to Generate Pixel Art from a Text Prompt

Step-by-step: turn a text description into clean, game-ready pixel art — choosing a model, size and style, then refining the result.

Generating pixel art from text is the fastest way to fill a game with art. Here's the full workflow, from prompt to a sprite you can drop into your project.

Step 1 — Open the pixel-art generator

From the main menu choose the Pixel Art generator. This is tuned for sprites, items and tiles rather than full illustrations.

Step 2 — Write a focused prompt

Good pixel-art prompts are short and structured: subject + view + a style hint. Examples:

  • "a wooden treasure chest, top down, pixel art"
  • "a knight with a blue cape, side view, 16-bit"
  • "a mossy stone wall tile, seamless, pixel art"

Avoid long paragraphs — extra words dilute the result. Name the perspective (top-down vs side) explicitly, because it changes the whole silhouette.

Step 3 — Pick a size

  • 16×16 — classic items, small enemies, UI icons.
  • 32×32 — characters and detailed items.
  • 64×64 — bigger characters, bosses, hero art.

Smaller sizes read more "retro" and are cheaper; larger sizes hold more detail.

Step 4 — Choose a model

Use Retro Diffusion for authentic pixel art with a clean, limited palette. If you want more painterly detail, try Flux and then pixelate the result (see the pixelate guide).

Step 5 — Generate and refine

Press Generate. If it's close but not perfect:

  • Tighten the prompt (add or remove one descriptor at a time).
  • Regenerate for a new roll of the dice.
  • Adjust size or model.

Iterate two or three times — small prompt tweaks usually get you there faster than starting over.

Step 6 — Save and use

Keep the winners in your library. From there you can remove the background, build a sprite sheet, generate animations, or export for your engine.

Common mistakes

  • Too much prompt. Five focused words beat a paragraph.
  • No perspective. Always state top-down or side view.
  • Wrong size. A tiny icon at 64×64 wastes detail; a detailed hero at 16×16 loses it.
