Choosing a Pixel-Art Resolution: 16×16 vs 32×32 vs 64×64

Resolution is one of the first decisions in a pixel-art project, and it ripples through everything — style, readability, animation effort and consistency. Here's how to choose.
What resolution actually controls
The pixel grid sets how much detail a sprite can hold. Fewer pixels force bold, readable shapes; more pixels allow fine detail but demand more craft and animate slower. It also sets the era feel — 16×16 reads as early retro, 64×64 as modern pixel art.
16×16 — icons, tiles, small enemies
Great for inventory items, UI icons, terrain tiles and tiny creatures. Silhouette is everything at this size; detail barely registers, so focus on a clear shape and a few key colors.
32×32 — the workhorse for characters
The sweet spot for player characters and detailed items in most 2D games. Enough room for a recognizable face, gear and a couple of animation frames, without ballooning your workload.
64×64 — heroes, bosses, portraits
Use for large characters, bosses, and detailed hero art or portraits. You get real detail — but animations take more frames and more time, and the style leans "modern pixel art".
Keep the grid consistent
Pick a base tile size (commonly 16 or 32) and build the game around it. Mixing resolutions makes assets look like they're from different games. If a boss is 64×64, it should still read as a scaled-up version of your 16- or 32-pixel world.
Practical rule of thumb
- Tiles + icons: 16×16
- Player + NPCs + items: 32×32
- Bosses + portraits: 64×64
Generating at the right size
When you generate, set the size to match its role. A hero prompted at 16×16 loses its detail; a coin at 64×64 wastes it (and costs more). Matching size to purpose keeps your art sharp and your credits efficient.
