Choosing the Right AI Model for Your Game Art

Flux, GPT-Image, Nano-Banana and Retro Diffusion each shine at different jobs. Learn which model to reach for and why.

Voidless gives you several image models, and picking the right one is half the battle. They differ in style, prompt-following, speed and cost. Here's how to choose.

Retro Diffusion — purpose-built pixel art

Retro Diffusion is trained specifically for pixel art and game tiles. It produces clean, palette-limited sprites, tilesets and items that already look game-ready with crisp edges. Reach for it when you want authentic pixel art — characters, items, tilesets — without post-processing.

Flux — versatile, high-fidelity

Flux is a strong general model with excellent detail and prompt adherence. Use it for concept art, references, illustrations and higher-resolution work where you want realism or painterly detail rather than strict pixel art.

GPT-Image — smart prompt understanding

GPT-Image is excellent at following complex instructions and composing scenes with text or specific layouts. If your prompt has a lot of requirements ("a UI panel with three buttons and a health bar"), it tends to interpret intent well.

Nano-Banana — fast iteration + editing

Nano-Banana is great for quick iterations and image edits — making changes to an existing image, variations, and rapid exploration where turnaround speed matters.

A simple decision guide

  • Want true pixel art / tiles / items? → Retro Diffusion.
  • Want concept art or detailed illustration? → Flux.
  • Prompt is complex or layout-heavy? → GPT-Image.
  • Need fast edits / variations? → Nano-Banana.

Match the model to the pipeline stage

Early on, use a cheaper/faster model to explore compositions. Once you know what you want, switch to the model whose style matches your game. Mixing is fine — many creators concept in one model and produce finals in another. Cost scales with capability, so don't pay for a premium model while you're still figuring out the prompt.
