Extracting Parts and Layers from an Image
Split a single image into separate pieces — head, body, weapon, props — so you can reuse, swap and animate them independently.
A finished piece of art is often more useful taken apart. Pulling a character's weapon, a building's door, or a scene's individual props onto their own layers lets you reuse, swap and animate each piece independently instead of being stuck with one flat image.
Why extract parts
- Swappable gear — pull a character's weapon or helmet so you can equip different ones.
- Reusable props — lift a single tree, barrel or rock out of a busy scene to reuse elsewhere.
- Animation prep — separate limbs or moving pieces so they can be rigged and moved on their own.
- Clean icons — isolate one object from a group shot to make an item icon.
Step 1 — Pick what to isolate
Decide which element you want on its own. Cleaner separation happens when the target has clear edges and doesn't blend into what's behind it.
Step 2 — Extract it
Select and lift the part you want. The goal is a clean cutout of just that element, with the rest removed — leaving you a transparent piece you can drop anywhere.
Step 3 — Fill or clean the gap
Removing a part can leave a hole in the original. If you still want the background, fill the gap; if you only wanted the extracted piece, discard the rest. Either way, tidy the edges so nothing frays.
Step 4 — Reuse the pieces
Now each part is its own asset:
- Equip extracted weapons/gear onto a character.
- Scatter an extracted prop across a level.
- Feed separated limbs into the Skeleton Editor for rigging.
- Turn an isolated object into a matching item icon.
Pair with background removal
Extraction and background removal are cousins — one lifts a piece out of a group, the other clears everything behind a subject. Use them together to turn one generated scene into a whole library of reusable parts.
